Wetsuit Care Guide

The TYR Hurricane wetsuits are made from the highest quality Slick Skin Neoprene and as such very little care is required. However, by following these simple tips it will ensure that whilst the suit is in your care it will not be damaged.
TYR Open Water and Triathlon specific wetsuits are thinner than normal and therefore require careful use. Well looked after suits can last many seasons. Take your time to put the suit on slowly and ensure you move the material around the body to get the fit right. Take care not to chip or snag the surface of the suit with your fingernails. Race wetsuits are made to be taken off quickly when done correctly, not put on quickly. Use a lubricant (Bodyglide is great) but avoid the use of petroleum-based products, aerosols or chemical solvents, as these degrade the neoprene.

What to wear under your wetsuit

Wear a Tri suit or similar if racing in a triathlon or swimwear if you're doing an open water swim. Whatever you wear should be tight and not have the ability to pucker up under the suit as you put it on. Most triathletes wear what they will race in under the suits. Remember nudity in the transition area will result in disqualification. Modern materials mean that everything will dry very quickly when you start the cycle.

TRISUITS are designed specifically for swimming, biking and running. They dry quickly, provide sufficient padding and will prevent chaffing in certain areas.

Taking the wetsuit off

Silicone gel / spray or baby oil will aid quick removal. NEVER USE PETROLEUM BASED PRODUCTS as this will damage the neoprene!

For fast take-off undo the zip before undoing the flap. Put your thumb under the suit at the shoulder (not your throat - do not tug the collar) and slide the suit down to your bicep on one arm. Reach behind and pull the sleeve off your tricep and down your arm. As you roll the suit down the body, keep it turning inside out. Do not try and step out of the suit until it is rolled down past the calves. Hook thumb under suit to pull free from feet. Once off, place on a towel.

Wetsuit Care

Never store the suit tightly folded. Instead, let the suit air dry and hang it on a broad, wide-shoulder hanger away from direct heat. Rinse the suit off with clean, fresh water after swimming in a pool or salt water. When you pack your suit in a race bag, carry it inside out (nylon side out) to avoid chipping the smooth neoprene skin. Pack loosely and be sure it is dry.

When drying your wetsuit, make sure it is inside out. Avoid leaving your wetsuit in direct sunlight. Do not fold your wetsuit - instead roll it, or better yet, keep on a plastic hanger to avoid creasing. Store in a cool dry place.

Wetsuit Fitting

WrightSport Wetsuit Fitting Guide

A well fitting wetsuit should be snug, NOT tight or loose.

Follow this fitting guide to help you ensure you have the right fit.

WrightSport Wetsuit Fitting Guide

  • Preparation

        1. First ensure you are wearing tight fitting clothing for underneath and there are no zippers buttons etc that can tag/tear the suit.

        2. Lube the neck area taking extra care around the rear. Lube your cuffs and ankles to aid quick removal.

        3. Lay the suit in front of you with zip fully down.

        4. Have two plastic bags handy (for in a minute)

  • Leg Entry

        1. Start by placing one foot into a bag and slide the foot into a leg of the suit.

        2. Pull the suit up over the calf of the leg.

        3. Put the second foot through the other leg with another bag on.

        4. Pull the suit up the legs ensuring as you do you pull the extra material up the leg. Do one leg at a time.

        5. The bottom of the suit leg should be on the knuckle of your ankle.

        6. Work the suit up towards the crouch, again ensuring all loose material is moved up the body.

        7. You will now have the suit around your waist.

        8. Grab the waist and get yourself comfy around the mid-section.

  • Arm entry

        1. You can now use the bags from your feet for your hands.

        2. Slide an arm in, and as you do ensure that the material is moved up the arm.

        3. The end of the sleeve should be around the watch area of your wrist.

        4. Pull the extra material up your arm making sure you are fitted up over your bicep.

        5. Now repeat with the other arm.

        6. You will now have your legs and arms in but the neck will be loose and you will still be undone at the back.

  • Torso entry

        1. Before doing the rear of the suit up grab the shoulder area of the suit one side at a time and pull towards your neck.

        2. Raise both arms above your head one at a time to move more material up the body.

        3. Now grab material around the pubis area with one hand and with the other grab the front neck area of the suit.

        4. As you pull up the material from the pubis area, pull forward the neck area and you should feel a rush of air as you release a vacuum.

        5. This will bring more material to the top are of the torso.

  • Zipping up Ideally you should have someone else zip you in, as they do roll your shoulder blades backwards to aid the zipping

        1. Grab from behind the long zip cored and pull up over your shoulder.

        2. Arch you back backwards as you do to aid the zip.

        3. Then raise your arms up as you zip up as if your stretching for the sky.

  • All triathlon wet suits have a Velcro neck area to tidy the zip into, fold the zip cord up into it and fold the flap across.

  • Raise the arms up above your head and then bend forward and role the arms, take a deep breath and you should be in!!

  • Wet suit removal

        1. Pull the zip cord down all the way

        2. Start over one shoulder roll the suit across your chest

        3. Repeat for second arm

        4. Roll suit to waist

        5. If doing triathlon run to T1 like this

        6. When ready roll the suit down the legs

        7. Pull one foot up and pull the leg inside out

        8. The lube around the ankle should aid your foot popping out

        9. Repeat for the other leg
